EB Stuff You May Not Know, Part 1
Hey, there's a method to the madness. This little article series is about a bunch of cool stuff you may or may not have known about EarthBound. Sometimes I'll throw in random stuff I think is amusing. Anyway, this article concentrates on the entirety of Onett through the Happy Happy Village.
Alright, Onett doesn't have as many out-of-the-ordinary things as subsequent towns. The most blatant of Beatles references does reside here, however. Nevertheless, the exploits of Lier X. Aggerate and the Minch family is a nice little background information on the EarthBound plot. First, there are the exploits of Lier. Obviously, Lier was searching for some great treasure, and when he found Mani Mani, he felt he was nearing his goal. Interestingly enough, he never digs any more in the cavern. However, by the time you can leave Onett, he has sold the statue to "a man named Carpainter." Lier comments on his mind controlling voice. Nothing really happens to him until the endgame, when he blocks passage to his cave and talks about "saving the world" many times before.
The Minch family is a little more interesting. Picky remains in the house the entire time. However, by the time you leave Onett, the rest of the family has disappeared. By the time you see drunk Alosius wallowing in his self-pity, Lardna has met Mr. Prettyman, who has apparently taken up residence in her house. Lardna neither knows nor cares where her son and husband have disappeared to.
After defeating Giygas, the Onett Newspaper reads, "[Chief Strong] finishes EarthBound. Asks, 'Where is Sequel?'" Not an exact quote though... Oh, and the Mach Pizza never opens...
Anyway, I'm gonna skip to Happy Happy Village. Did you know that in a Beatles Music video, the "Blue Meanies" decide to rid the world of music and color everything blue? Huh, sound familiar? Also, in Mother 2, Paula says that if Ness hadn't come, she'd have been crying. That's a lyric from a Beatles song. Also, if you give the woman who is trying to rid the world of contaminant 100 billion dollars, she'll still just give you a postcard. Also, you can visit the Mr. Saturn in Happy Happy Villiage once you've seen his buddies in the real Saturn Valley. Also, have you ever tried beating Mondo Mole before even getting Paula? It's a little easier, but she gets no exp. from the whole experience. You could surprise attack all the creatures there, though...
Oh, did you know Paula gains levels the slowest of all the characters in the begining of the game? Depending on how you play, she catches up and runs cirlces around Jeff(who starts off fastest) by the time you've rescued her from Mr. Monotoli. Yeah, that's right, each character has it's own exp. requirement to gain levels.
Venus' mother talks about how she worries about having a daughter in showbiz... Talk to her once you can get to Fourside... Huh, I can't think of anything else. Oh, you can return the bicycle to the shop, but you probably knew that. Some of the townspeoples text changes if you return with an unconcious Paula (mostly people who have an interest in her).
If you thought this was interesting, I have some more useful tidbits about later areas. More Beatles stuff! Well, e-mail [email protected] if you liked it or uh, [email protected] if you do not. Don't be too mean.
