Where in the World is 199X? Part 2
Continuing my theory that Earthbound takes place in 19910, I will continue on to discuss society and technology.
One thing of note is the system of the government. The entire nation of Eagleland doesn't have a president, and only Onett has a mayor, probably because of high crime rates in Onett. Twoson also has a crime record, but that's kept down by Everdred. I'm sure you've noticed the strange economy, with over-expensive items, which also says "Not in 1990s". The same currency is also accepted everywhere you go. On a minor note, family life has changed slightly, as many kids (namely Apple Kid and Orange Kid), tend to live on their own. The military is practically non-existent as well.
And look at how technology is different. Buildings are bigger on the inside than they are on the outside, so now we have spatial compressors. There are never any stoves or microwaves used, so there's bound to be another smaller and quicker way to prepare food. People can also store more food in smaller places. People also never have TVs or radios either, implying that they've found better entertainment value elsewhere. I'd also like to point out the Mani-Mani statue, capable of producing one or more hallucinogenic worlds, namely the famous Moonside. And what of these lasers that Jeff gets, Spinning Robos and Atomic Power Robots? Certainly mankind could've developed them too. Dalaam's "flying in the sky" deal could be some sort of technology allowing megaton objects to fly on their own for very extended periods of time.
Look at transportation as well. Escargo Express and Mach Pizza can get to you in less than 30 seconds if you're outside, and even when you're in Zombie Threed you can get Escargo Express deliverymen coming by. You never see an airport, which could possibly mean they don't have airplanes and have a better way to get from continent to continent, and it's not like it's far to get from Twoson to Fourside. You never see gas stations either, which means cars have a new fuel source. The hospital system has also radically improved, as your fallen teammates are transported to a nearby hospital almost immediately, no matter where you are. They also have a tendency to be transferred to any hospital youre at at the time.
I know Earthbound Zero has the same tech and takes place in the 1980s. By then again, it could very well be a typo, and it takes place in the 19800s. Ever think of that?
And of course you're wondering: Why call it 199X? It could've been used to seperate one year from the other while writing a MM/DD/YY format date.
